What Are Your Freon Choices?

What Are Your Freon Choices?

For many years we've used R-22 Freon which has been used since the 1950's. A few years ago, the EPA decided that we had to get rid of Freon because of its ability to deplete the ozone. We came up with a new refrigerant called Puron or R-410A.

The main difference between these two refrigerants is when the R-22 Freon leaks out, it does put a hole in the ozone layer and when the R-410A leaks out if it ever does, it will not be harmful to the environment. So if your air conditioner is over 10 years old, chances are it still runs on the old Freon, R-22. The two are not compatible and cannot be mixed. So, if you leak out any of your refrigerant, it has to be replaced with the old, inefficient, expensive refrigerant R-22.

So, if you have an air conditioner failure, let's say your compressor burns out or you have a leak in your cooling coil, look for a company that's recommending replacing that machine instead of repairing it and continuing with the old R-22 Freon. You don't want to be caught up in the 2015 mandate that says you can no longer use this in your home. It is expected that the air conditioning business will be extremely busy within the next few years in regards to the changing of Freon. Currently, R-22 Freon is no longer being manufactured just recycled.

It would be much more economical if you chose to replace your unit with a more efficient unit that uses the new, future of Freon - Puron R-410A.

This unit will be more efficient, cools better, and environmentally friendly.
