What You Need to Know About the New 2025 HVAC Refrigerants

Exciting changes are coming to the HVAC world as manufacturers prepare to meet updated EPA guidelines. Starting January 1, 2025, R-410A refrigerant will no longer be used in new air conditioning and heat pump systems. Instead, new 2025 HVAC refrigerants (more environmentally friendly options), such as R-32 and R-454B, will take its place.

Some manufacturers are already making the switch, shipping units with these updated refrigerants ahead of schedule and planning to phase out R-410A by the end of 2024. This transition is designed to reduce the environmental impact of HVAC systems, as the new refrigerants have a lower Global Warming Potential (GWP).

When Should I Upgrade?

If you're considering replacing your air conditioner or heat pump, you may want to act sooner rather than later. Here's why:

  • Current Systems Are More Affordable: Heating and cooling systems using R-410A are generally less expensive than the next generation of systems designed for R-32 or R-454B refrigerants.
  • New Systems Come with Added Costs: Manufacturers are equipping these systems with additional safety sensors. While these features are essential for safety, they increase the overall cost of the unit.

By upgrading now, you can save on upfront costs and avoid the higher prices associated with the newer models.

What About Future-Proofing?

Replacing your system with one that uses R-32 or R-454B can be a good way to reduce your environmental footprint. However, there's no immediate urgency to switch if your current A/C system is in good condition. Here's why:

  1. R-410A Is Here to Stay (for Now): Although R-410A will no longer be used in new systems, it will remain widely available for servicing existing units. Much like the phaseout of R-22 (Freon) in 2010, R-410A will still be accessible for many years to come.
  2. Greener Options Are Available: If making an environmentally conscious choice is a priority, upgrading to a system using R-32 or R-454B is a great option. These refrigerants operate more efficiently and have a smaller environmental impact.
